Understanding the Joker's Role in Your Strategy
The joker changes how you think about every hand you're dealt. In standard video poker, a hand with no pairs and no draw potential is almost always a full discard. In Joker Poker, that same hand might contain the joker — and suddenly you're holding a wild card that can become anything. The decision of what to pair it with is where the strategy lives.
At l89 bet, experienced Joker Poker players follow a priority system. If you have the joker, you first check whether you already have a made hand — a straight, flush, or better. If you do, hold it. If not, look for the highest-value draw the joker can support. A four-card royal flush draw with the joker is the strongest possible draw. A four-card straight flush comes next. After that, three of a kind, then four-card flush draws, and so on down the list.
Without the joker, the strategy is closer to standard Jacks-or-Better video poker, with one key difference: the minimum paying hand in Joker Poker is typically Two Pair rather than a single pair. This means you should be more aggressive about drawing to straights and flushes rather than holding a single high pair hoping for two pair.
One thing players at l89 bet often overlook is the importance of playing maximum coins. The Natural Royal Flush payout jumps dramatically at max coins — it's the one hand where the coin multiplier doesn't scale linearly. If your bankroll allows it, always play max coins in Joker Poker. The difference in expected value over a session is meaningful.
